Begur, Cost Brava.

The owner of this very special house in Begur, a beautiful historic town at the centre of life in the Costa Brava region of Catalunya, asked us to come up with ideas on how to improve their very tiny staircase which is both awkward and uncomfortable to use.

The main challenge was to resolve the staircase geometry without adversely affecting the traditional lath and plaster vaulted structure that holds up the first floor and that is an original feature of the house.

The solution was to reverse the staircase and begin where the headroom was greatest and simplify the transition to the bedrooms at the first floor.
